The marine reserve of Plemmiro, Capo Murro di Porco and the surrounding beaches
The Plemmirio is a marine protected area located south of the Magdalene peninsula that includes a 6 km coast between Punta Castelluccio and Capo Murro di Porco south of Syracuse.
One of the most famous places is the "Grotta Pellegrina," identified as a place for shelter dating back to the Prehistory. At Punta della Mola there is a necropolis with annexed village dating back to the Bronze Age. Along the coast are six "latomie" (Greek-age quarries), evidence that it was in this area that the ancient suburban zone of the Plemmyriom was located. During the last decade a large part of this protected area has become a residential area where Syracusans have built their elegant summer villas. The coast is rocky around here and and the nearby sea has been repopulated with time by its original flora and fauna such as solitary corals, sea sponges, bryozoans, sea cicadas, nudibranchs and many other fish species. In shallow waters large areas of Poseidon sea grass is more likely, with giant examples of the "Pinna Nobilis" mollusc, the largest shell in the Mediterranean.
