Palermo

Heima's location is both enchanting (located in the old Arabic quarter "la Kalsa") and very handy to the many interesting sights that Palermo has to offer. It's easy to wander around the streets of the "old town" and you'll marvel at its buzzing centre and unpredictable nature. Many of the city centre's old palaces are majestically dishevelled and there's something to be discovered around every corner. If you don't feel like sightseeing on foot you can try one of the romantic carriages, a typical APE Calessino or by City Sightseeing. There are so many things to see when visiting Palermo but some things are an absolute must. We highly recommend the following: the two famous Theatres "Politeama" and "Massimo", Palazzo dei Normanni o Palazzo Reale, San Giovanni degli Eremiti, La Cattedrale, lo Spasimo, Piazza della Vergogna, Piazza Bologni, Piazza Marina, Palazzo Steri, Palazzo della Zisa, La Cuba, La Martorana (o San Cataldo) San Giuseppe dei Teatini, San Salvatore, Casa Professa, Castello a mare, Orto Botanico e Villa Giulia, il Loggiato di San Bartolomeo, la Kalsa, piazza Magione, the famous markets "Vucciria", "Ballarò", "Pulci"(flea market), "il Capo" e Lattarini, museo Pitrè, museo delle Marionette, Sant'Anna Modern Art Gallery (GAM), Palazzo Branciforte, Palazzo Abatellis, Villa Malfitano Witaker, Giardino Inglese and Mure delle Cattive (Palazzo Butera).

If it's Sicilian street food you are after then it's worth trying "pani ca meusa" (bread rolls filled with sautéed beef spleen or tripe) in the Cala area or at the famous Focacceria San Francesco. You may also enjoy an aperitif near the harbour at Nautiscopio at Foro Italico, a pizza in Piazza Marina right near Palazzo Steri, typical Sicilian dishes at the Osteria dei Vespri or some boiled octopus in the seaside village of Mondello. Not far from the city centre you can visit: Castello Utveggio, La Palazzina Cinese, Charleston beach resort in Mondello or the Duomo (cathedral) in Monreale. Further afield is the island of Ustica which takes about 45 mins by hydrofoil or the Aeolian Islands can be reached by hydrofoil from June to September in 2hours 45.
