Portopalo di Capopassero, the island of the currents and Marzamemi

The beaches of the extreme south of Sicily that look at Africa

On the same parallel of Tunis, stands the ancient village of Portopalo di Capo Passero, a watershed between two seas, the Ionian and the Mediterranean which border it. This coastline is characterised by small rocky coves that alternate with sandy beaches. The beach of Carratois is located right in the middle of the two seas and it is not rare to find a calm sea on one side and a stormy sea on the other. Be sure to visit the two islands opposite the village and that are part of the municipality: the Island of Capo Passero and the Island of the currents. The Island of Capo Passero, connected to the mainland by a strip of sand which can be crossed when the tide is low, is also reachable by canoe, pedal boat or a small fishing boat that takes from and to the island every day at set times. Once arrived, there is a fine amber-coloured sandy beach that slopes down to a turquoise and crystal clear sea. An exotic scenario that radically transforms in the northern area, where the coast becomes rugged and rocky. Not to be missed are the warehouses of the old tonnara (tuna fishery) and the fort of Capo Passero.
