Summary

This antique country house was once divided into master and servants quarters, the winery (the "palmento," where grapes were transformed into wine) with its wine press and must vats, the storerooms and the wine cellar where the wine barresl were left for vinification. This farming business prospered until the mid-1960s, when the landed estates in this area gave way to citrus groves. Today, this former aristocratic villa in its dramatic setting-with the sea to one side and Mt Etna to the other-houses guest rooms offering visitors a glimpse of Sicily. The luxuriant garden is dotted with citrus trees, palm trees and other Mediterranean species and boasts a beautiful swimming pool.

Property details

This property is immersed in a 10,000 square-metre citrus grove and plant nursery. The tall lofty trees provide plenty of shade for relaxing in on hot days or you can cool off in the swimming pool if you prefer. By the pool there's a dressing room and bathroom too. Another corner of the garden houses a large stone patio with dining table, BBQ and a fridge. An external staircase leads to the first floor where the spacious interior consists of a kitchen, dining table and a sofa corner with comfy couches and armchairs and an adjoining terrace with great views of the sea and Etna beyond, a gazebo and dining table. Three double bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and a small toilet are on this floor too. A spiral staircase leads up to a loft, where there's a large child-friendly bedroom with three single beds and a bathroom. On the ground floor – with a separate entrance – are the housekeeper's apartments. Next to these are the storerooms and the old winery ("palmento"). Though no longer in use, definitely worth having a look at.

Area

Area

This property is close to Acireale in the province of Catania and lies at the foot of the eastern slopes of Mount Etna (Linguaglossa). It's just a few metres from the area's pebbly beaches and to the tiny pleasant village of Carruba where there's a pharmacy, a few food shops and bars. On this part of the coast dense vegetation, Mediterranean plants and citrus groves thrive. Not far from the guesthouse is the spectacular Timpa Nature Reserve which is worth a visit-the 7 km long cliff formed from lave flow is covered with ivy and carob and quite spectacular. The close by quiet and pretty seaside village of Santa Maria la Scala boasts a celebrated seafood restaurant with views over the sea and just a few kilometres away is Taormina and Catania and the park of Mount Etna (which can be accessed via Zafferana Etnea or Linguaglossa). And when you've seen all that, you can head to the Alcantara River Gorges, Isola bella in Taormina, the medieval villages of Novara di Sicilia and Montalbano Elicona and the baroque village of Militello in Val di Catania too!
