Summary

To be able to reside within a private archaeological park that contains one of the most ancient and fascinating necropoli in south-eastern Sicily is a priviledge in itself and most likely impossible anywhere else. Just one of the reasons that Sicily is so extraordinary! This ancient and fortified Sicilian manor farm (“Masseria”) was built next to a Greek-Roman necropolis and later used as a shelter by manor farmers for their agricultural and farming activities and for storage of food supply in its cool interior. This particular farm was renowned for its abundance of water and for the elaborate system of tunnels and canals used for rainwater collection which has been carefully preserved over the years. Its previous owner was a famous Italian writer, who used to spend a lot of time in this oasis of peace where he found inspiration for his celebrated novels.

Property details

A large wrought-iron gate takes you through to the magnificent courtyard of the Masseria that's enclosed by thick stone walls. On one side of the garden is the handsome and typically Sicilian row of houses sharing a courtyard known as a Baglio and on the other a string of caves and caverns sloping up the rocky hill. A small pool has been created in a rock basin too. On the verdant lawn of the courtyard you can relax on the loungers and in comfy armchairs in the shade of the century-old olive, palm and pomegranate trees. There's an outdoor table for 8 on the southern side of the garden too which is perfect for an evening under the stars. Inside the main building is a spacious living room with sofas and fireplace and an adjoining dining hall. Off here, two double bedrooms, the bathroom and the large Sicilian-style kitchen with wood-burning oven and grill. In the second building there's a table, benches and a corner kitchen; a large double bedroom and a small bathroom. A third bed can be added to any of the double bedrooms as required so as to accomodate up to 8 people. In the grounds of the estate there is a tool shed and a an old cattle shed that has been transformed into a car-shed.

If you choose this South-Eastern stretch of Sicily as your holiday destination you won't be disappointed. The property is located just a few kilometres from the gorgeous baroque town of Palazzolo Acreide with its stunning palazzi and churches and some of the best trattoria on the island. Although slightly off the beaten track, the raw nature, heavenly scents and intense, natural light make it a paradise for nature-lovers and sun-seekers alike. There are plenty of sandy beaches to be found along the rocky coastline too, like the ones in the Nature Reserve of Vendicari. On top of all that, it's just a skip away from the Unesco World Heritage site of the Baroque Noto Valley and its towns Ibla, Scicli, Modica, Ispica and Noto, The archeological and nature reserves of Pantalica and Cavagrande aren't far away either and you'll wonder at the grandeur of the Sicilian castles as well. If you fancy going further afield, we suggest a visit to Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina and the Mount Etna site. Have a happy journey!
