Illuminated tower - Erice

Erice preserves a number of medieval buildings of great artistic and cultural value among the most sought-after in western Sicily. Entering from Porta Trapani, you will immediately come across the Cathedral of Erice, the Real Chiesa Matrice Insigne Collegiata, built in the 14th century by Frederick of Aragon. Facing the Cathedral is the beautiful Gothic-style bell tower. Along the climb that takes you to the Corso you will meet numerous churches including that of San Martino built at the behest of Roger the Norman. Along the Corso and in the narrow lanes nearby there are numerous trattorie that serve excellent local cuisine; an ancient and renowned pastry shop “Grammatico” has made the history of sweets in Sicily, here you will find numerous local delicacies which have become a rarity and reason for a not-to-be-missed stop-off point for visitors to Erice. At the top of the Town, stands the fable-like Castle of Venus when shrouded by the fog or at sunset, from its gardens you can enjoy one of the most scenic views of Sicily, the lowland of Trapani which slopes towards the Mediterranean and towards the horizon, in the distance the archipelago of the Egadi Islands.
