Those who come to Sicily for the holidays cannot ignore a few simple elements: the sun, the sea, the architectural beauties that you voluntarily or involuntarily come across during your walks, good food and excellent wine! In this regard, one of the most popular destinations for international tourism is the Florio cellars, one of the oldest winery in Sicily and best known for the production of Marsala wine. The plant, in fact, is located in the homonymous town in the province of the splendid Trapani and offers an excellent starting point for exploring the beauties of north-western Sicily: beyond the wine cellars rich in history, you cannot miss the fascinating salt pans of Trapani, and right from Trapani by hydrofoil you can visit the Egadi Islands in a day. Another sensational stop is the Island of Mozia with its historic landing stage and the Zingaro Reserve, Scopello and the Caribbean beach of San Vito lo Capo.

The winery was founded in 1833 by Vincenzo Florio who, after purchasing a large slice of land, had a factory built there for the production of Marsala. Precisely because the plant was located between the beams of Ingham - Whitaker and Woodhouse, already producers and exporters of Marsala wine since 1796, the first years of the Florio Cellars were very difficult, with little earnings, and they could survive only thanks to the fame and to the resources of the Floria family, then among the richest in Italy, It was their merchant fleets and their international trade organization that made Marsala the dessert wine most served on European and, subsequently, American tables. Since then, the cellars have passed through different hands (eg Cinzano and ILLVA S.p.A) but the good Marsala survives together with the production of Moscato, Passito di Pantelleria, and other wines such as Duca di Salaparuta, Corvo and Florio.

We highly recommend a guided tour inside the Florio cellars among their giant vats built at the end of the 19th century, and still used today for the refining of Marsala, and inside the 3 splendid 165 meter long barrel rooms with 1400 carts and about 600 barrels for a total of almost 5,500,000 litres of Marsala. Of course, the tour could end in the wonderful Florio terrace where, while enjoying the light breeze and the breathtaking view, you can taste excellent wines. And after letting yourself be inebriated by the beauty of the place, not only metaphorically, you can always stay and rest in one of our fantastic luxury villas with private pools in the Trapani area.
