The Trabacche cave is silently hidden among the limestone plateaus that characterise the Iblei mountains, in the splendid province of Ragusa, one of the most beautiful points of interest of tourism in south-eastern Sicily.

Great testimony of funeral architecture and undoubtedly one of the largest caves in the province, the importance of this monument is indisputable: since the second half of the 1700s, it has attracted attention and inspired great artists such as Jean Houel who described his travels to Sicily also through a whole series of paintings including the Trabacche cave. He was the author of the four volumes of the "Voyage Pittoresque des Isles de Sicile, de Malte et de Lipari" published between 1782 and 1787.

Due to its shape and size, it is thought that the cave dates back to the 4th century A.D. and it is nothing more than a Roman catacomb perfectly preserved over time. Consisting of a hypogeum formed by two large adjacent chambers, inside two main canopied sarcophagi are distinguished in the rock and decorated with a series of columns. Other arcosolium tombs are placed along the walls and others can be found below the floor level, but still perfectly visible. Unfortunately, there are no traces of frescoes but enchanting and almost magical is the play of light that delicately enters from a hole positioned in the centre of the cave and that majestically illuminates the rock.

Jean Houel was not the only one to make known this wonderful jewel of south-eastern Sicily: in fact, the Trabacche cave was the undisputed protagonist of one of the episodes of "Il Commissario Montalbano" based on the novel "The Terracotta Dog" by Andrea Camilleri . The story of the narrative work tells that right here, together with a terracotta dog, the bodies of two engaged lovers are found. But the only crime is that, after the great film debut in 2007, this pearl of the Ragusa area and flagship of national and international tourism has been completely abandoned to itself in the wonderful countryside of south-eastern Sicily. What are you waiting for? Enjoy the colours of the Sicilian landscape and, through a patch of dry stone walls, you can reach this wonderful monument without even paying an entrance ticket!
