Among the various reasons that every year push hundreds and hundreds of tourists from all over the world to make our splendid Sicily a significant stop or the only destination of their holidays, we certainly cannot ignore the landscape aspect, our fantastic nature reserves and their numerous and particular beaches which have nothing to envy of the most famous seaside areas and not at an international level.

Today, in particular, we want to talk to you about the magnificent Vendicari Faunal Oasis Oriented Nature Reserve, which covers 1,500 hectares and is located in the province of Syracuse, precisely between Noto and Marzamemi, particularly important due to the presence of marshes which act as a place of stopover in bird migration.

There are four accesses to the Vendicari Reserve: one in the Eloro area, one in the Cava delle Mosche area, the main entrance at the height of the Swabian Tower and that of Cittadella dei Maccari (home of the Byzantine settlement of which remains a small temple and the necropolis). Particular importance is given to the numerous species of birds that stop in Vendicari: waders, grey herons, storks, flamingos and, furthermore, the mallard, seagulls, cormorants and the black-winged stilt. The month of December is the best for bird watching.

But December is not the only month in which we recommend visiting the Vendicari Reserve. Indeed, there are 5 beaches within the Reserve:

  • Eloro: about 300 metres walk from the car park, beach equipped with a bar and showers
  • Marianelli: shallow water, very fine sandy beach, secluded and quiet, a little difficult to reach
  • Calamosche: a natural paradise, a small, isolated and quiet beach, reachable on foot in about 20 minutes (1 km.)
  • Vendicari: long strip of sand with shallow seabed, bordered to the north by the remains of the ancient Tonnara
  • San Lorenzo: located in the southern part, easy to reach, ideal for children, just outside the Reserve

In particular Calamosche, with its crystalline sea and located within the wonderful and evocative eastern coast of Sicily between Noto and Marzamemi, is undoubtedly one of the most characteristic and versatile beaches of the reserve and of the whole island. What makes it so special is also its position and its morphology: it is in fact located between two rocky promontories which, in addition to ensuring that the sea is almost always calm and almost motionless, offer its guests a breathtaking view among the most varied vegetation. . The two promontories are also dotted with numerous ravines and caves which, together with the quiet of the sea, offer excellent bases for snorkelling. What better place to enjoy the sea during your holidays and perhaps stay in one of our spectacular Luxury Villas with private pools in south-eastern Sicily?
