In the heart of the Iblei Mountains, you will find this beautiful village called Monterosso Almo, which has less than 3000 inhabitants and is part of the "Most Beautiful Villages in Italy" circuit. About twenty kilometres from Ragusa, one of the provinces increasingly sought after by international tourism, the village interwoven with churches, alleys and monuments, breathes an uncontaminated air that envelops a humble lifestyle between modernity and ancient traditions.

An atmosphere that has struck directors of the calibre of Tornatore and Sciarra who have chosen the village as a film set for films such as "L'Uomo delle Stelle" and "La Stanza dello Scirocco". Monterosso Almo is one of the many things to experience and visit during your trip to south-eastern Sicily that has many beauties to share.

Among others, the splendid city of Ragusa Ibla, the famous
Donnafugata Castle, the Irminio River Reserve and the beaches of Playa Grande and Marina di Ragusa and why not? Syracuse and the island of Ortigia, the Cavagrande del Cassibile Reserve and the Quarries of Ispica. Your holidays will surely be full of adventures!

The origins of Monterosso Almo have their roots in ancient times, as evidenced by the hypogeum of Calaforno with its 35 rooms discovered only in the 1960s and the oldest in the Val di Noto. This was initially used as a burial place, then as a dwelling and, in the Roman period, as a place of refuge for Christians.

In 1168 the town belonged to Goffredo, son of Count Roger and, in this period, it took the name of Monte Jahalmo. Later it passed into the hands of Count Enrico Rosso, of the Sicilian royal family of Altavilla, who had a castle built of which today all traces have been lost. Enrico married the daughter of Federico Chiaramonte and it was thus that the village became part of the County of Modica and took the name of Monterosso.

Between the fall of the Chiaramonte, the management of Bernardo Cabrera whose lust for power brought the town to ruin and the various attempts at rehabilitation, it was on 11 January 1693 that Monterosso was definitively destroyed by the earthquake that decimated eastern Sicily. Of the town, later rebuilt higher up the mountain, only a few ruins remained, such as the chapel of Sant’Antonio and the Ancient Windmill.
