In the heart of the province of Enna, stands the majestic Roman Villa del Casale in Piazza Armerina, the flagship of Sicilian tourism and protected by UNESCO, which included the establishment in the World Heritage List in 1997.

The discovery of this priceless treasure is due to Gino Vinicio Gentili who in 1950 undertook the research following reports from the local inhabitants. And it is they who have spread the name of villa as it is popularly defined in this way despite not having the characteristics of the extra-urban Roman villa, rather those of the imperial urban palace. The creation and installation of this marvelous residential building were traced back to no earlier than the middle of the 4th century, mainly observing the style of the mosaics. In a second moment, the tetrarchic age (285 - 305) was thought of to finally arrive at the conclusion that, through the examinations on the walls, both the villa and the mosaics belong to a succession of times ranging from 320 to 370. This late antique residence, which was born with an administrative, residential and representative function, is built on different levels and divided as follows:
  • Official reception;
  • Administration, unofficial banquet halls, halls of worship;
  • Residential units with connected service rooms;
  • Passage and service areas.

The villa is spread over 48 rooms, in about 3500 square metres of surface, rich in mosaics perfectly preserved over time and which allow us to trace the history of the greatest and most illustrious of the Empires by portraying scenes of everyday life, depictions of heroes and divinities, hunting and game scenes.

The Villa represents an excellent testimony to an understanding of Roman life and civilization and is absolutely not to be missed during your holidays in Sicily. To date, there is no certainty as to who the owner is: the most accredited hypothesis identifies the owner as Lucio Aradio Valerio Proculo Populonio, an illustrious figure of the Constantinian age and governor of Sicily from 327 and 331. One thing is certain: despite it is not clear who the owner is, the "Villa Romana del Casale" awaits you with open doors in Piazza Armerina.
