Our very Sicilian Cammino de Santiago: the Path of St. James.

The reasons that lead thousands of tourists every year to travel to a place like our beloved Sicily rather than another are truly many: some will be attracted by our history of invasions and enriched by the different peoples who have set foot in our profitable land; others will be attracted by our legends and superstitions resulting from that ability to remain strongly anchored to the past; still others will want to appreciate the good food, the good wine, the beautiful and almost Caribbean beaches. But, sometimes, we forget about perhaps the most important journey of all: that of internal, spiritual research.

Henry Miller wrote: “One's destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things” and again Italo Calvino: “You don't appreciate the seven or seventy-seven wonders of a city, but the answer it gives to your question” . Well yes, that moment comes for everyone when they feel the need to slow down for a moment, to stop and think and reevaluate certain aspects of their life and personality: perhaps a moment of confusion for some, but certainly of rebirth for everyone.

And what helps in this journey is precisely the Cammino di San Giacomo, patron saint of pilgrims and emblem of this crossing, both physical and spiritual, which winds along a route of approximately 130 km between valleys and mountains starting from central Sicily: from Caltagirone to Capizzi. By analogy it is connected to the more famous Camino de Santiago in Spain with which it shares the history of the saint and spiritual characteristics. According to legend, during the night of July 25th, the Grand Count Roger dreamed of Saint James, in the guise of "Matamoros" (Moor slayer) armed with the sword which would become the emblem of the Military Order of Santiago and later called the "sword of Saint James".

The path can be modulated depending on the weather and the characteristics and aptitudes of the walkers who wish to follow it. Regardless of whether you want to experience it on foot or by bicycle, the advice is not to be in a hurry and not to rush in order to fully savour everything you will encounter during the different stages (Caltagirone, San Michele di Ganzaria, Mirabella Imbaccari, Piazza Armerina, Aidone, Valguarnera Caopepe, Assoro, Nissoria, Nicosia, Capizzi). Furthermore, the Camino is not only open to independent travellers but also to travellers with disabilities: there is a route suitable for wheelchairs and one entirely on asphalt suitable for hand bikes.

At the beginning or end of this wonderful journey, we recommend you stay in one of our sensational luxury villas with private pool present in the most famous cities of Sicily (such as Syracuse, Ragusa and Catania) and which also offer an excellent starting point to visit the wonders of the area: the Donnafugata Castle, the house of Commissioner Montalbano (protagonist of the homonymous TV series inspired by the novel by Andrea Camilleri), the cities of Sicilian Baroque UNESCO heritage of Noto, Modica, Scicli, Ragusa Ibla and Ispica, the Cavagrande del Cassibile and Vendicari reserves, the Ispica quarries and much more like The Theatre of Puppets of Caltagirone and the Etna volcano.
